SYMPTOMS

When you use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall a program that an administrator assigned to your user account, the assigned program is no longer displayed on the Start menu.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because of policy inheritance. If the assigned program is in an upper Group Policy Objects (GPO) and the published program is in a lower GPO, when the user uninstalls the published version, the advertised version is no longer displayed.

For example, when an administrator uses GPOs to publish a program and assign the same program to a user, and the user uses the Add/Remove Programs tool to install the published version, and then uninstalls the program, the assigned version is not displayed on the users Start menu.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, do not assign and publish the same programs in a single GPO or multiple GPOs that apply to a user or group of users.

STATUS

This issue is by design in the Windows Installer and Group Policy tools.
