Web Pages with ActiveX Controls Are Not Displayed Properly (240897)

SYMPTOMS

When you view a Web site that contains an ActiveX control, you may experience any of the following symptoms:
  • You are not prompted to download and install the control.
  • A red X is displayed where the control should appear.
  • You receive script errors stating "Object required" or "Name is not an object."

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you do not have permission to write to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry hive or the Downloaded Program Files folder on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact your network administrator to obtain the appropriate permissions for downloading ActiveX controls.

This behavior is by design.

When you use Microsoft Internet Explorer to view a Web site that contains an ActiveX control in Windows 2000, Internet Explorer determines whether you have the appropriate permission to install and run the control before downloading it. Internet Explorer does this by attempting to write to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry hive. If the attempt to write to the registry is unsuccessful, Internet Explorer does not download the control.

If you perform a clean installation of Windows 2000 (not an upgrade over Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or Microsoft Windows 98), members of the Users default group cannot download ActiveX controls and experience one or more of the symptoms listed above.

Administrators who want to deploy particular ActiveX controls so that members of the Users group can download and run them can do so using the IntelliMirror Software Installation and Maintenance technology in Windows 2000.
