The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office 2000 Server Extensions

This article was previously published under Q240772

SUMMARY

Installing the Office 2000 Server Extensions (OSE) on a Primary Domain Controller (PDC) or Backup Domain Controller (BDC) is NOT a recommended configuration.

MORE INFORMATION

When you attempt to install the OSE on a computer that acts as a PDC or BDC, there are several issues that can arise. These issues include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Difficulty of Installation and/or Configuration
  • Missing Windows NT User Accounts
  • Security Degradation
  • Performance Degradation
Office 2000 Server Extensions were not intended to be run on a PDC or BDC configuration and were not thoroughly tested in such an environment. Domain Controllers have a specific function on a network. Domain Controllers function is centralized administration of both data and user accounts.

When you add services to a Domain Controller, you increase it's responsibility to the Network. As a result, the server's performance suffers.

Certain configurations may not be supported by Product Support Services. Look for updates in this article concerning such unsupported configurations.
