DHCP Service in ICS Does Not Assign 192.168.0.1 IP Address to LAN Adapter (240443)

After you install Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on a host computer, you may experience the following symptoms:
- The DHCP service does not assign the 192.168.0.1 IP address to the LAN adapter.
- The Winipcfg utility displays the Auto IP address on the LAN adapter.
- The Network tool in Control Panel shows only the TCP/IP -> Network Adapter, and no "(HOME)" next to TCP/IP. The properties of this item show "Obtain an IP address automatically" instead of the 192.168.0.1 IP address and 255.255.255.0 subnet mask.
- There is a Yellow Exclamation point on the ICS Adapter in Device Manager and it has a Code 2 error message.
CAUSE
This issue can occur if some of the files installed with Dial-Up Networking adapter are damaged.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, uninstall and then reinstall Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) and the Dial-Up Networking adapter:
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- On the Windows Setup tab, double-click Internet Tools, and then click to clear the Internet Connection Sharing check box.
- Click OK, click Apply, and then click No when you are prompted to restart the computer.
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.
- Click the Dial-Up Networking adapter, click Remove, click OK, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.
- Click Add, click Adapter, click Add, click Microsoft, click Dial-Up Adapter, and then click OK.
- Insert the Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive when you are prompted, and then click Yes to restart the computer.
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- On the Windows Setup tab, double-click Internet Tools, click to select the Internet Connection Sharing check box, click OK, click Apply, and then follow the instructions on your screen to complete the ICS wizard.
