SYMPTOMS

When multicasting a multi-bitrate .asf file the Windows Media Player will report lost packets on the statistics dialog box.

CAUSE

The Windows Media Server only sends the highest bitrate video band and audio in a multi-bitrate .asf file. The Windows Media Player sees that the other video bands (up to 4 bands) are missing and reports the packets from those bands as being lost.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows Media Services version 4.0.
