Description of the Possible "Local Area Connection" Icon States (240395)

The Local Area Connection icon in the Network and Dial-up Connections folder can be in any of the following four states:

• Active or enabled. The icon appears active, with the icon's computer screens in color when you are using Large Icons view or Small Icons view in the Network and Dial-up Connections folder. The status in Web view or Details view is "Enabled." This state is representative of the connection being active and working. The icon on the taskbar looks like two computers with the screens flashing.
• Disabled. The icon appears dimmed or shaded when you are using Large Icons view or Small Icons view. The status in Web view or Details view is "Disabled." This state is representative of the connection being disabled. There is no icon on the taskbar.
• Cable or media disconnected. The icon appears dimmed or shaded with a red X when you are using Large Icons view. The status in Web view or Details view is "Network cable unplugged." This state is representative of a broken network cable or a cable that is not plugged into the network adapter. The icon on the taskbar looks like a computer with a red X.
• The icon is not present. There is no Local Area Connection icon when there is no network adapter present, or when the adapter is not configured properly.

Note that the icon for a local area network connection appears on the taskbar only if the Show icon in taskbar when connected check box is selected in the connection's properties.

The network adapter must support media sensing to support the media disconnected state.
