W32time Does Not Clean and Modify the Registry After Changing from Master to Primary Role (240365)

SYMPTOMS

The W32time tool from the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 does not clean and modify the registry after it is changed from a master to a primary role. This causes excess traffic on the network and requires manual editing to set the proper timer server.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

WORKAROUND

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To work around this behavior, manually edit the Time Server values in the registry and remove the old keys.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
