How to Add a Remote Printer to the SBS Console User Access Wizard (240343)

To add a remote network printer to the list of available printers in the SBS console User Access Wizard, use the following procedure.

NOTE: Before you begin the procedure, make sure the printer is shared out to all clients.

Step 1: Install the Remote Printer Drivers on the SBS-Based Computer

1. On the SBS-based computer, click Start, click SBS Console, and then click Tasks.
2. Click Manage Printers, and then click Add a printer.
3. When the Add Printer wizard starts, click Network Printer Server, and then click Next.
4. In the Shared Printers area, double-click the name of the client computer.
5. Click the shared printer, and then click OK. You may receive the following message:
   The server on which the printer resides does not have a suitable printermodel printer driver installed. Click OK if you wish to install the driver on your local machine.
   If you receive this message, click OK to install the drivers on the server.
   
   
6. Click the manufacturer and model of the printer (or click Have Disk if you have updated printer drivers or if the printer is not on the list).
7. Complete the Add Printer wizard process.

Step 2: Share the Printer from the SBS-Based Computer

1. On the SBS-based computer, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then click Printers.
2. Right-click the remote printer you just added, and then click Sharing.
3. When the Properties dialog box for the printer is displayed, click Shared.
4. In the Alternate drivers area, click the types of drivers you want to install on the server.NOTE: This setting supplies various client computers with the correct version drivers for the shared printer. For example, if you want Microsoft Windows 95/98 clients to gain access to the remote printer, make sure you click Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 x86. You may be prompted to insert the correct operating system disk that contains the specified drivers.

Step 3: Add the Printer to the SBS Clients

1. On the SBS-based computer, click Start, click SBS Console, and then click Tasks.
2. Click Manage Users, click a user from the list, and then click manage user permissions.
3. When the User Access wizard starts, click Next, and then click Next again.
4. When the Select Shared Printers for Username dialog box is displayed, click the remote printer, and then click Add.
5. Click Next several times to complete the User Access wizard, and then click Finish.
