After .zap File Is Set Up, Its URL Parameter Does Not Show on Add New Programs Page (240054)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

This article was previously published under Q240054

SYMPTOMS

After you set up a .zap file for a non-Windows Installer-based program, if the .zap file contains a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) parameter, you may discover that the URL parameter does not appear on the Add New Programs page of Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, despite the fact that your documentation may indicate that the URL should appear there.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the URL does not appear on the Add New Programs page of Add/Remove Programs for any software that has not yet been installed, although some early descriptions of the .zap file format incorrectly indicate that it should.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

If a program has been installed by using the .zap file, the URL information will appear on the Change or Remove Programs page for the program.

A .zap file is a text file (similar to an .ini file) that provides information about how to install a program, what the program's properties are, and what entry points the program should install.

An example of the format for the URL parameter within a .zap file is as follows:
URL = http://www.microsoft.com/office
