Works 2000: Lines of Text Are Pasted over More Than One Cell (239963)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works Suite 2000

This article was previously published under Q239963

SYMPTOMS

When you copy a few lines of text from a document, and then paste those lines of text into a cell in a Microsoft Works 2000 Spreadsheet, these lines of text are pasted over more than one cell.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the lines of text contain commas.

Works 2000 interprets the commas as delimiters, and therefore, when Works 2000 encounters a comma, Works 2000 pastes the next series of text into another cell.

For example, if you copy the following text

Use the Works 2000 Word Processor to quickly write a letter, create a flyer, or produce a school report. Make any writing project look polished and professional.

and then paste these lines of text into a cell in your spreadsheet, these lines of text are pasted over three cells.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Word or the Works 2000 Work Processor.
  2. On the File menu, click Open.
  3. In the Open dialog box, browse and select the file that you want to open, and then click Open.
  4. Select the lines of text that you want to copy.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Replace.
  6. In the Find and Replace dialog box, type , in the Find what box.
  7. In the Replace with box, verify that there is nothing in there.
  8. Click Find Next.
  9. When you find a comma, click Replace.
  10. Repeat step 9 until all the commas are replaced with nothing.
Now, when you copy the lines of text into a cell in your spreadsheet, all the text is copied to a single cell, instead of to several cells.
