XADM: How to Move the Transaction or System Logs to Another Location (239944)

SUMMARY

You may need to move the transaction or system logs associated with a particular Storage Group to another drive or folder. The article describes the procedure for this task.

To move the log files:
  1. Start Exchange System Manager.
  2. Right-click the Storage Group for which you want to move the log files, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the General tab.
  4. Click Browse

    NOTE: Click Browse for the type of logs you want to move. You can move the System logs and the Transaction logs in the same operation.
  5. Click the new location or create a new folder by clicking the New Folder button, and then click OK.
  6. Click Apply. You receive the following warning:

    You are about to perform the following operations which will invalidate all of your existing incremental and differential backups:

    - change Exchange transaction log path location
    - change Exchange system path location

    After completing these operations, you should perform a full backup.

    Do you want to continue?
    <Yes> <No>

  7. Click Yes. You receive the following warning:

    To perform the requested operation, all the stores associated with this storage group must be temporarily dismounted, which will make them inaccessible to any user.

    Do you want to continue?
    <Yes> <No>

  8. Click Yes to begin the operation.
  9. You receive the following confirmation message indicating that the operation has finished:

    The paths have been successfully changed and all the previously mounted stores are back online.

IMPORTANT: As the warning dialog box suggest, you must perform a full online backup after this operation.
