SUMMARY

This article describes how to use templates in Microsoft Works 2000, Microsoft Works 6, or Microsoft Works Suite 2001 that were designed for previous versions of Microsoft Works.

When you run Works, templates designed for previous versions of Works do not appear on the Tasks tab in Works Task Launcher until you open and then save them as new documents or templates.

Some templates created in earlier versions of Works may not be compatible with Works and may not function as expected. Wizards designed for earlier versions of Works do not work in Works 2000, Works 6, or Works Suite 2001.

MORE INFORMATION

To make a template that was designed for a previous version of Works appear on the Tasks tab in Works Task Launcher, use the appropriate method for your version of Works.

Works 2000 or Works 6

  1. Start Works Word Processor.
  2. On the File menu, click Open.
  3. In the Files of type box, click Document Templates (*.wpt) or Works Documents (*.wps).

NOTE: If Works 2000 cannot read a template created in a previous version of Works, you receive the following error message:
Works cannot open filename. The file may be in use by another application, the file format may not be supported by any of the installation converters, or the file may be corrupt.
You may be able to open an older Works word processor template if you rename the template file to change the .wpt file name extension to a .wps file name extension, and then open the file as a word processor document.
  4. In the Look in box, click the folder that contains the template you want to use.

By default, templates created in Works 4.x are stored in the following folder:

    C:\Program Files\MSWorks\Template

  5. Click the template you want to use, and then click Open.
  6. On the File menu, click Save As.
  7. Click Template.
  8. In the Type a name for the template below box, type a name for the template, and then click OK.
Works 2000 saves templates in the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\Template

To use a template to create a new database, spreadsheet, or word processor document in Works 2000:

  1. On the File menu, click New.
  2. In the Works Task Launcher, click the Tasks tab.
  3. Click Personal Templates, and then click the template you want to use.

Works Suite 2000 (Microsoft Word 2000) or Works Suite 2001

  1. On the File menu in Microsoft Word 2000, click Open.
  2. In the Files of type box, click Works 2000 (*.wps; *.wpt).
  3. In the Look in box, click the folder that contains the template you want to use.
  4. Click the template you want to use, and then click Open.
  5. On the File menu, click Save As.
  6. In the Save as type box, click Document Template (*.dot).
  7. By default, the Templates folder appears in the Save in box.

If you want Word 2000 to list the template on the General tab when you create a new document, proceed to the next step.

If you want Word 2000 to list the template on a different tab when you create a new document, click the appropriate folder in the Save in box.
  8. In the File name box, type a name for the new template, and then click Save.
To use a template to create a new document in Word 2000:

  1. On the File menu, click New.
  2. In the New dialog box, click the tab that contains the template you want to use.
  3. Under Create New, click Document, and then click OK.
NOTE: When you use Word to open a Works template from the installation CD-ROM for a previous version of Works, you may be prompted to insert the Word CD-ROM so that a Works Word Processor (.wps) text filter can be installed. This behavior does not occur if you copy the template to the hard disk, and then open the template from within Word.
