When you work with various PostScript-compatible printers, it is important for optimal performance and output to verify that your PostScript printer driver is using the same PostScript Language Level as the printer's PostScript interpreter.

To determine which PostScript Language Level your printer driver is using:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  2. Right-click the PostScript Printer you are using, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the PostScript tab, and then click Advanced. The PostScript Language Level used by the printer driver is listed in this dialog box.


Over the years, the PostScript language has been extended for more programming capabilities, efficiency, and flexibility. These language extensions have been designed to change the PostScript language to accommodate new imaging technologies and system environments.

Extensions are organized into three major groups: Language Level 1, Language Level 2, and Language Level 3. Each Language Level includes the feature sets of the prior Language Levels, as well as the new features implemented in the new level. A PostScript interpreter that claims to support a given Language Level must implement all features defined in that Language Level as well as all of the features from the previous levels.
