XADM: Cannot Use Double-Byte Character Set Characters to Name Network News Transfer Protocol Folders (239778)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q239778

SYMPTOMS

If you create a new Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) folder with a name that contains double-byte character set (DBCS) characters, either of the following symptoms may occur:
  • Two folders may be generated (both folder names are translated to use single-byte character set characters).
  • The folder name may be appended with a hyphen (-).
Either of these symptoms can potentially create a folder conflict.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because Request for Comments (RFC) 822 only allows ASCII characters between 33 and 128 in headers, and this includes newsgroups.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, do not use DBCS characters to create NNTP folders.
