Cannot Add Network Service After Upgrading from SBS 4.0 to SBS 4.5 (239739)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5
This article was previously published under Q239739 SYMPTOMS
After you upgrade from Small Business Server (SBS) 4.0 to SBS 4.5 and you attempt to install a network service, the installation is not successful and the following error message is displayed:
Noncritical Error
An error has occurred.
Unable to open the file path and file name.
A non-critical error has occurred. You may retry the operation, ignore it, or exit the entire Setup operation.
If you retry the operation it fails, if you skip the file the next file setup needs displays the same error.
For example, this behavior can occur when you try to install Windows Internet Name Service (WINS), Remote Access Service (RAS), or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because the base Windows NT source files are not included in the upgraded version of SBS 4.5.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use the SBS 4.0 CD-ROM 1 as your source. After you add a service, you need to reapply the version of the service pack you are currently running to maintain compatibility and server functionality.
SBS 4.5 includes Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4, which is included on SBS 4.5 CD-ROM 1 in the Bkoffice\I386 folder. The file name is Sp4setup.exe.
