Works 2000: Letters Wizard Displays Recipient Name More Than Once in "Merge Recipients" List (239404)

  • Microsoft Works 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Letters Wizard that is available in the Microsoft Works 2000 Word Processor to create letters for all occasions, the recipient name appears more than once in the Merge Recipients list in the Select Names dialog box.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the Letters Wizard does not resolve the recipient name in the Merge Recipients list in the Select Names dialog box. However, the recipient name is resolved in the Select entries from the Address Book for a mail merge list in the Works Letter Wizard dialog box.

RESOLUTION

This behavior does not influence the functionality of the Letters Wizard. You may not want to use the Letters Wizard. Instead, to work around this issue, you can use the Mail Merge feature that Works 2000 offers. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Works 2000.
  2. Click Works Word Processor on the Programs tab, and then click Start a blank Word Processor document.
  3. Type your letter.
  4. On the Tools menu, click Mail Merge, and then click Open Data Source.
  5. In the Open Data Source dialog box, click Merge from the Address Book.
  6. In the Insert Fields dialog box, click Insert to insert the appropriate fields into the appropriate locations in your letter.
  7. On the Tools menu, click Mail Merge, and then click Select Names.
  8. In the Select Names dialog box, click Select twice to add a recipient name twice to the Merge Recipients list, and then click OK.
  9. On the Tools menu, click Mail Merge, and then click Select Names again.
  10. The recipient name is resolved and only appears once in the Merge Recipients list in the Select Names dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Works 2000.
