Works 2000: Error Message When You Install as an Upgrade (239370)

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Works 2000 as an upgrade to Microsoft Works 99, you may receive the following error message:
Canceling the Installation Wizard
When you click Finish, you are returned to the desktop, and Works Setup may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if components of Works 99 are running during Setup.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, quit all running programs, and then install Works 2000 as an upgrade. To do this:
  1. Quit all running programs except Explorer and Systray. To do this:

    1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to open the Close Program dialog box.
    2. Click any program except Explorer and Systray, and then click End Task.
    3. If you receive a message that the program is busy or not responding, click End Task again.
    Repeat this step until you have quit all programs except Explorer and Systray.
  2. Install Works 2000 as an upgrade.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
