Works 2000: Cannot Copy an Entire Database Column to a Spreadsheet (239351)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 2000
  • Microsoft Works Suite 2000

This article was previously published under Q239351

SYMPTOMS

When you copy a column of data in a Microsoft Works 2000 Database by clicking the field name cell (the whole column is automatically selected), and then clicking Copy on the Edit menu, and you then attempt to paste the column into a Works 2000 Spreadsheet column or cell, the following error message may appear:
The Clipboard contents cannot be pasted here.

Make sure the destination area is as large as the information you want to paste, or select only a single cell where you want to paste.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the Works 2000 Database can support 32,000 rows and the Works 2000 Spreadsheet can only support 16,384 rows. When you click the field name cell on the Database, you automatically select every row in the Database, even if there is no data in the row.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, select and copy only the cells in the Database that you want to paste into a Works 2000 Speadsheet. To illustrate this, follow these steps:
  1. Start the Works 2000 Database, and then create a blank database.
  2. On the Create Database dialog box, in the Field name box, type DATA.
  3. Click Add, and then click Done.
  4. Create the following database in the DATA field:
       1: Apple
       2: Pear
       3: Peach
       4: Orange
       5: Banana

  5. Select cells 1 through 5 in the DATA field.
  6. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  7. Start the Works 2000 Spreadsheet.
  8. Select cell A:1.
  9. On the Edit menu, click Paste. The Database is successfully copied.
