Works 2000: Spreadsheet Object Is Not Displayed As an Icon When Document is Reopened (239345)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 2000

This article was previously published under Q239345

SYMPTOMS

When a previously saved Microsoft Works 2000 document has a spreadsheet object inserted as an icon in it, and you then proceed to reopen the document, the spreadsheet object is not displayed as an icon.

Instead, a miniature version of the spreadsheet is displayed, and the font in the spreadsheet object appears very large and very close together.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you do the following:
  • Create a Works 2000 document.
  • Insert a spreadsheet object as an icon.
  • Save the document as a Rich Text Format (.rtf) file.
  • Reopen the document in Works 2000.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, resize the spreadsheet in your document. Do not make the object active. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start the Works 2000 Word Processor.
  2. On the File menu, click Open.
  3. In the Open dialog box, select Rich Text Format (*.rtf) in the Files of type box.
  4. Browse to select your file, and then click Open.
  5. Click the object only once, so that you do not make it active.
  6. Drag the sizing handles to resize the spreadsheet.
  7. On the File menu, click Save As.
  8. In the Save As dialog box, select Rich Text Format (*.rtf) in the Save as type box, and then click Save.
NOTE: When you reopen this document, the spreadsheet object is not displayed as an icon because the file was saved as an .rtf file. However, the font and the spreadsheet are legible.

WARNING: When you double-click the object to make it active, you may notice the following behavior:
  • The spreadsheet object displays only cells with text. That is, it does not display any blank cells.
  • When you use the sizing handles to resize the object, the object appears to be redrawn several times, and you may notice that the speed of your computer decreases drastically.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Works 2000.
