Works 2000: Entire Cell Is Replaced by Asterisks When Replacing a Question Mark (239324)

SYMPTOMS

When you click Replace on the Edit menu of your Microsoft Works 2000 Spreadsheet or Works 2000 Database file, and then attempt to replace a question mark (?) with an asterisk (*), Works 2000 replaces each non-question mark character with one asterisk, and each question mark character with two asterisks.

For example, if one of the cells contains the following:

Hello?

when you attempt to replace the question mark with an asterisk, Works 2000 does the following:

*******

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, you need to manually replace the question mark with an asterisk. To do this, follow these steps:

Steps to Follow for Works 2000 Spreadsheet

Start the Works 2000 Spreadsheet.
On the File menu, click Open.
In the Open dialog box, browse and select your spreadsheet file, and then click Open.
On the Edit menu, click Find.
In the Find dialog box, type ? in the Find what box, and then click OK.
When Works 2000 finds the question mark, type * in the cell to manually replace the it.
Repeat steps 4-6 until all the question marks are replaced with asterisks.

Steps to Follow for Works 2000 Database

Start the Works 2000 Database.
Click Add in the Create Database dialog box, and then click Done.
On the File menu, click Open.
In the Open dialog box, browse and select your database file, and then click Open.
On the Edit menu, click Find.
In the Find dialog box, type ? in the Find what box, and then click OK.
When Works 2000 finds the question mark, type * in the cell to manually replace the it.
Repeat steps 5-7 until all the question marks are replaced with asterisks.
