The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 2000

This article was previously published under Q239305

SYMPTOMS

When you use a special character in a Microsoft Works 2000 Word Processor document, and you then replace the special character by typing over it, the background spelling checker may stop working.

When you click Spelling and Grammar on the Tools menu, the spelling checker does not check for misspelled words after the special character that you typed over.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when you backspace over a special character and then replace the special character with a letter.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, turn off the background spelling checker if you are going to use a lot of special characters in a document. The foreground spelling checker will continue to work properly when you want it.

To turn off the background spelling checker, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Under Proofing Tools, click to clear the Background spell checking check box.
  3. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Works 2000.
