SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to format columns in a Microsoft Works 2000 Word Processor document, you may notice the following symptoms. When you click Format, and then click Columns and set the Number of columns to a value greater than 1, the Preview in the Format Columns dialog box may not display the column breaks in the last line of your document.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the Windows font size on your computer is too small. This behavior occurs regardless of the screen size; that is, it does not matter whether the screen size is set to 800 by 600 pixels, 1024 by 768 pixels, or anything else.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, you need to increase the Windows font size. To do this, follow these steps:

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. On your Windows desktop, click the Start button.
  2. Point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.
  3. In the Display Properties dialog box, click the Settings tab.
  4. Click the Advanced button, and then click the General tab.
  5. In the Display pane, click Large Fonts in the Font Size box, and then click OK.
  6. A Changes System Font dialog box may appear with a message similar to the following:

Changes in the system font will only take effect after the fonts have been installed and Windows has been restarted.

    Click OK.
  7. Click OK again on the General tab.
  8. A Changes System Font dialog box may appear with a message similar to the following:

You have selected a new system font size. Are you sure you want to change the system font size and install new fonts?

    Click Yes.
  9. A General dialog box may appear with a message similar to the following:

Required files are already installed on your hard disk. Setup can use these existing files, or Setup can recopy them from your original Windows CD-ROM or from a network share.

Would you like to skip file copying and use the existing files? (If you click No, you will be prompted to insert your Windows CD-ROM or to supply an alternate location where the needed files may be found.)

    Click Yes.
  10. In the Display Properties box, click the Close button.
  11. A System Settings Change box appears with a message similar to the following:

You must restart your computer before the new settings will take effect.

Do you want to restart your computer now?

    Click Yes.
