Works 2000: Five-Digit Number Appears in Database Cells (239196)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 2000
  • Microsoft Works 6

This article was previously published under Q239196

SYMPTOMS

If you adjust the height of a row in a Microsoft Works 2000 or Microsoft Works 6 database that contains serialized fields, a five-digit number appears in the cell of each serialized field in the row that you adjusted.

When you adjust the height of another row, a five-digit number, greater than the previous number by a value of one, appears in the cell of each serialized field in that row.

You cannot delete these numbers.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Works 2000 Database treats any changes to a cell as data, and assigns a serial number to the data.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

On the Edit menu, click Undo Record Height immediately after you adjust the row height.

NOTE: When you click Undo Record Height, you undo both the serial number and the adjustment to the row height.

Method 2

To adjust the height of a row without adding a number to a serialized field:
  1. In the Create Database dialog box, add all of the the non-serialized fields that you want to include in the database, and then click Done.
  2. In the new database, select the row that you want to adjust.
  3. On the Format menu, click Record Height.
  4. In the Row height box, type the row height that you want, and then click OK.
  5. On the Record menu, point to Insert Field, and then click either Before or After.
  6. Under Format, click Serialized, click Add, and then click Done.
The serialized field is added with the row height that you want, and no serial number is added to the row.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

You can adjust the row height of every row in the database without adding a number to serialized fields. To do this:
  1. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
  2. In the Row height box, type the row height that you want, and then click OK.
If a row already contains data in the serialized field, you can change the record height without affecting the serial number.
