Works 2000: "Not Enough Memory" Error Message When You Import an Excel Spreadsheet (239184)

SYMPTOMS

When you import a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet file, the following (or a similar) error message may appear:

There is not enough memory for new formats.

To apply new formats, remove old formats from your selection, or close other documents or applications.

This error message may appear even when the Excel worksheet that you are attempting to import contains no special formatting.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because some worksheets in the workbook contain a large amount data or a large number of specially formatted cells. Even when you intend to import only one sheet of an Excel workbook, the import converter looks at all of the workbook.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, follow these steps:

Start Microsoft Excel.
On the File menu, click Open.
Navigate to the workbook containing the worksheet that you want to import to Microsoft Works 2000 Spreadsheet, and then click Open.
Click the sheet tab of the worksheet that you want.
On the File menu, click Save As.
In the Save as type box, select Microsoft Excel 4.0 Worksheet.
Name the file, and then click Save. You can now open the individual worksheet that you want with the Works 2000 Spreadsheet program.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
