The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 2000

This article was previously published under Q239139

SYMPTOMS

When you create a document with Microsoft Works 2000 Word Processor, and the document is at least two pages long and the page break occurs after the first line of a new paragraph, the first line of the new paragraph is left on the first page by itself, making it an orphan.

When you create a document with Works 2000 Word Processor, and the document is at least two pages long and the page break occurs immediately before the last line of a new paragraph, the last line of the paragraph is moved to the second page by itself, making it a widow.

CAUSE

Works 2000 Word Processor does not have automatic orphan or widow control. This behavior is different than that of Works 4.5.

RESOLUTION

To remove an orphan, place the insertion point at the left of the orphaned paragraph line and press ENTER to add another hard carriage return. The first line of the new paragraph now starts on page two.

To remove a widow, place the insertion point at the left of the first line of the first paragraph of page one and press ENTER to add another hard carriage return. The first line of the new paragraph now starts on page two.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Works 2000.
