SUMMARY

Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 domain controllers (DCs) cannot be fully administered from Windows 2000 Professional workstations without Usrmgr.exe and Srvmgr.exe. These services are not provided on Windows 2000 Professional workstations.

MORE INFORMATION

You can copy the Srvmgr.exe and Usrmgr.exe files from a Windows 2000 Server installation and use them on a Windows 2000 Professional workstation to administer downlevel DCs. These tools can also be installed from the Windows NT 4.0 Server CD-ROM.

To install Windows NT Server tools on a Windows 2000 Professional workstation from a Windows NT 4.0 CD-ROM:
  1. Start Windows Explorer.
  2. Browse the Windows NT 4.0 Server CD-ROM to locate the following folder, where Platform is the appropriate platform for your computer:

    Clients\Srvtools\Winnt\Platform

NOTE: Running Setup.bat from the Winnt folder generates the following error message:
Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. Windows must restore the original versions to maintain system stability.
Microsoft does not recommend running Setup.bat to install the Windows NT 4.0 Server tools.

  3. Copy the Srvmgr.exe and Usrmgr.exe files to the appropriate location.
