BUG: Desktop Junction Point Not Opened Correctly (237878)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer (Programming) 5

This article was previously published under Q237878

SYMPTOMS

When a shell namespace extension is installed on the desktop using a junction point (a folder with a Desktop.ini file in it), opening the folder causes a standard file view to be opened, not the namespace extension's view. This problem occurs only when Internet Explorer 5 is installed over Internet Explorer 4.0 with the Desktop Update, and the junction point folder is located on the desktop. This problem does not occur when opening a similar folder from any other location.

CAUSE

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. There is no way to programmatically work around this problem. There is also no way to correct this problem except to uninstall Internet Explorer 5.

STATUS

This bug has been fixed in Windows 2000.
