This article was previously published under Q237809 SYMPTOMS When you press the Mute media hot key on the Microsoft
Keyboard, the command may be ignored even though the on-screen
display message appears.
All the other media hot keys function as
expected. CAUSE This behavior occurs if you connect your speakers or
headphones to the audio output jack on your CD-ROM drive. RESOLUTION To prevent this issue from occurring, connect your speakers
or headphones to the line-out jack on your sound card.
If you are
cannot listen to audio compact discs when your speakers or headphones are
connected to the line-out jack on your sound card, connect a patch cable
between the audio output jack on your CD-ROM drive and the line-in jack on your
sound card to work around this issue. MORE INFORMATION You are also cannot use the volume control on the taskbar
to mute CD audio if your speakers or headphones are connected directly to the
audio output jack on your CD-ROM drive.
