Windows 2000 Terminal Services Requires Licensing Service (237801)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
This article was previously published under Q237801 SUMMARY
Windows 2000 Terminal Services uses a license-management feature called Terminal Services Licensing. This feature is used to manage license quantities for Windows 2000 Terminal Services Client Access Licenses (CALs) and Windows 2000 Terminal Services Internet Connector. No other licenses (such as Microsoft Office CALs or Windows 2000 File and Print CALs) are managed by Terminal Services Licensing.
Licensing management is for Windows 2000-based servers with Terminal Services installed in Application Server mode. Application Server mode is similar in concept to Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Terminal Server Edition. Note that Terminal Services installed in Remote Administration mode does not require Terminal Services CALs or the deployment of the Terminal Services Licensing service. By default, the Administrator account and members of the Administrators group are the only accounts available to connect using the Terminal Services client for remotely managing Terminal Services.
