SYMPTOMS

When you click to open an e-mail message, you may receive the following error message:
Outlook caused an invalid page fault in module Mshtml.dll.

CAUSE

There may be a problem with your installation of Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, uninstall Internet Explorer 5 and then reinstall it. To completely remove and then reinstall Internet Explorer 5:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click to select Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools, and then click Add/Remove.
  4. Click to select Restore the Previous Windows Configuration, and then click OK.
  5. Reinstall Internet Explorer 5 by running Ie5setup.exe from the \IE5\EN folder on the Office 2000 Compact Disk.
NOTE: Renaming the file to Mshtml.dll and then running Detect and Repair, will likely not fix this problem. If you are using Microsoft Windows 98 Second Editon, you may not have Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools in the Add/Remove Programs. In this case rename Mshtml.dll, run Ie5setup.exe from the \IE5\EN folder on the Office 2000 Compact Disk, and choose to reinstall Internet Explorer 5.
