SYMPTOMS

When you start your computer, you may receive one of the following error messages:
Unable to locate and initialize VSGLX16.386 for 16 bit audio board hardware. This drive is not present or failed to load. Check hardware configuration.
16 Bit Audio Drive Alert. The VSGLX16.386 driver is not present or failed to load. Check hardware configuration, run Setup to reconfigure driver if necessary, then restart your system.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you replace the Sound Galaxy Nova-16 Extra II (or similar) sound card/modem in your Packard Bell computer with another modem or sound card.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use the Microsoft System Configuration Utility (Sysedit) to edit the System.ini file. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type sysedit, and then click OK.
  2. On the Window menu, click System.ini.
  3. In the [386 Enhanced] section, type a semicolon (;) at the beginning of the following line:
    • device=vsglx16.386
  4. In the [Drivers] section, type a semicolon (;) at the beginning of each of the following lines:
    • Wave=mm16w.drv
    • AUX=mm16w.drv
    • Midi=mm16w.drv
    • Mixer=mm16w.drv
    • Midi1=sapi!opl.drv
  5. Type a semicolon at the beginning of the [Mm16.drv] section if it exists.
  6. On the File menu, click Exit, and then click Yes to save the changes.
  7. Restart your computer.
