Encarta Encyclopedia 2000: Printed Maps Appear Completely Black (237516)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to print a map from Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia 2000, the printed map may appear completely black.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the following conditions are true:
  • Encarta Encyclopedia 2000 is installed on a Compaq Prolinea 575 computer.

  • You are using one of the following printers when you attempt to print the map:

    • Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 4Si
    • Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 5Si

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 4Si/4SiMX PS printer driver to print from Encarta Encyclopedia 2000. To do this:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  2. Double-click Add Printer, and then click Next.
  3. Click Local printer, and then click Next.
  4. In the Manufacturers box, click HP.
  5. In the Printers box, click HP LaserJet 4Si/4SiMX PS, and then click Next.
  6. In the Available ports box, click the port your printer is connected to, and then click Next.
  7. Under Do you want your Windows-based programs to use this printer as the default printer, click No, and then click Next.
  8. When you are prompted to print a test page, click Yes (recommended), and then click Finish.
  9. When the test page is finished printing, click Yes.
  10. Close the Printers window.
  11. Use the HP LaserJet 4Si/4SiMX PS printer driver to print from Encarta Encyclopedia 2000. To do this:

    1. On the Options menu, click Print, and then click Print Setup.
    2. In the Name box, click HP LaserJet 4Si/4SiMX PS, and then click OK.
    3. Click OK, and then click Print.
