The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q237487 SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to install a SQL Server 7.0 Service Pack on a computer that is running SQL Server 7.0 using an alternate pipe name, you may receive the following error message when attempting to log on using SQL Server authentication or NT Server authentication:
Setup was unable to validate your password. Press Retry to re-enter your password or press Cancel to exit out of setup.
and this error message when using Windows NT authentication:
Setup was unable to validate the logged on user. Press Retry to enter another option, or Cancel to exit setup.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use the Server Network Utility, shipped with SQL Server 7.0, to reset the pipe name back to its default, \\.\PIPE\SQL\QUERY if the connection is through named pipes. Or, use the Client Network Utility shipped with SQL Server 7.0 to reset the default network library into named pipes if the SQL Server does not listen to default TCP/IP port number.
Additionally, make sure that there are no aliases that are defined with alternative network libraries in the Client Network Utility that point to the local server that is running SQL Server.
