PUB2000: Help Incorrectly Lists Insert Picture from Photo-Draw Command (237438)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 2000

This article was previously published under Q237438

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Publisher 2000, if you ask the Office Assistant this question:

How do I insert a picture?

one of the Help topics listed is called:

Add a picture using Microsoft PhotoDraw

This topic incorrectly states that if you click Picture on the Insert menu, there is a menu item called From PhotoDraw.

CAUSE

The Help topic is incorrect. It should refer to Microsoft Draw, instead of Microsoft PhotoDraw.

RESOLUTION

The instructions in the Help topic are correct if you substitute the New Drawing command for the From PhotoDraw command. The instructions should really read:
  1. Make sure no object is selected.
  2. On the Insert menu, point to Picture, and then click New Drawing. Microsoft Draw will open a new, blank picture that you can use to insert or copy your picture into.
  3. In Microsoft Draw, insert or create the picture you want to add.
  4. Click outside the drawing area to return to Publisher.
NOTE: You can use PhotoDraw to create a picture to use in Publisher. If you create a picture in PhotoDraw, you can use the copy and paste technique to move a copy of it into Publisher. You can also insert an existing picture by using a number of methods.

Method 1: Import the Picture as an Object

To import the picture as an object, follow these steps: NOTE: This method only works if you have PhotoDraw installed.
  1. On the Insert menu, click Object.
  2. In the Insert Object dialog box, click to select the Create from File option.
  3. Click Browse.
  4. Navigate to the folder that contains your PhotoDraw (.mix) file.
  5. Click to select the name of the file you want to import, and then click Open.
The picture appears in your publication. You can edit the picture by double-clicking it.

Method 2: Save the PhotoDraw File in a Format Publisher Can Directly Import

Publisher 2000 does not include a graphic import filter for PhotoDraw (.mix) files. However, PhotoDraw can export its drawings in a number of other graphics formats that Publisher can import. PhotoDraw even includes a Wizard to help you choose which format you want to use.

NOTE: This method also requires that you have PhotoDraw installed.
  1. Open the file in PhotoDraw.
  2. On the File menu, click Save for Use In.
  3. On the first step of the Save for Use in Wizard, click to select the In a Publication option.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Follow the rest of the instructions
