HOW TO: Manually Edit Ntbackup.exe Selection Script Files (237310)

SUMMARY

When you create a scheduled backup job in Windows 2000, a selection script (.bks) file is created with a list of folders and files that are to be backed up and that are to be excluded from the backup job. You can edit this list of files by clicking Load Selections on the Job menu in the Backup tool (Ntbackup.exe). When you click the Load Selections command, load the .bks file that is named for the backup job that you created. Any files, folders, or network shares that you scheduled for backing up are selected. You can make any appropriate changes, and then click Save Selections on the Job menu to save them.

Ntbackup.exe saves the .bks file with the list of files to be backed up under your profile in the Drive:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTbackup\Data folder. The file is named with the name of the backup job.

Manually Editing the .bks File

1. Start Notepad.exe.
2. Open the .bks file.
3. Make the appropriate changes as described in the following table.

   Entry	Result
   X:\	This entire drive will be backed up.
   X:\Folder_name\	Files in this folder will be backed up.
   X:\Folder_name\ /exclude	Files in this folder will be excluded.
   X:\File_name.ext	This file will be backed up.
   X:\File_name.ext /exclude	This file will be excluded.
   SystemState	The System State will be backed up.
   \\Server\Share\Folder\	These network files will be backed up.

4. On the File menu, click Save As.
5. In the Save as type box, click Unicode, and then click Save.
