To define transparency in a Microsoft Office application, use an alpha channel instead of a clipping path. An alpha channel allows you to specify one color in your graphic as a transparency color. Each pixel that has that color value is rendered transparent, allowing the background color to show through.

You can apply a transparent area to an existing bitmap graphic using the transparency tool on the Picture toolbar.

1. On the View menu, point to Toolbars, and make sure that the Picture toolbar is selected.
2. Click your picture once to select it.
3. On the Picture toolbar, click the Set Transparent Color icon.
4. On your picture, click the color that you want to make transparent.

NOTES:

It may be difficult to see the transparent effect in a photograph because the color you select may appear in very small areas. What appears to be a single color, such as a blue sky, can actually be a range of subtle color variations.

You can make only one color transparent. When printed, transparent areas are the same color as the paper they are printed on. In an electronic display--such as on a Web page or in an Office document--transparent areas are the same color as the background.
