SYMPTOMS

If you connect the Microsoft Digital Sound System 80 (DSS80) speakers to the Universal Serial Bus (USB) port on a Compaq Presario or Hewlett Packard Pavillon computer, you may experience either of the following symptoms:

  • Microsoft Windows may seem to detect the DSS80 and install the drivers necessary to use it, but the speakers do not work.

  • The Microsoft Digital Sound System 80 entry may be missing from the Sound, Video, And Game Controllers branch in Device Manager.

  • You may not be able to select the Microsoft Digital Sound System as the preferred playback device in the Multimedia tool in Control Panel.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if your computer does not support audio playback using the Windows Driver Model.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use the analog cable included with the DSS80 to connect the speakers to the sound card in your computer.
