DSS80: Speakers Do Not Work When Connected to USB Port (235560)

If you connect the Microsoft Digital Sound System 80 (DSS80) speakers
to the Universal Serial Bus (USB) port on a Compaq Presario or Hewlett
Packard Pavillon computer, you may experience either of the following
symptoms:
- Microsoft Windows may seem to detect the DSS80 and install the
drivers necessary to use it, but the speakers do not work.
- The Microsoft Digital Sound System 80 entry may be missing from the
Sound, Video, And Game Controllers branch in Device Manager.
- You may not be able to select the Microsoft Digital Sound System
as the preferred playback device in the Multimedia tool in Control
Panel.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if your computer does not support audio playback
using the Windows Driver Model.
RESOLUTION
To work around this issue, use the analog cable included with the DSS80
to connect the speakers to the sound card in your computer.
