ACC2000: Microsoft Data Engine Setup Stops Responding While Connecting to Server (235432)

SYMPTOMS
After the Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) Setup program copies files to your computer, it stops responding during the "Connecting To Server" phase.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, follow these general steps, which are discussed in more detail in subsequent sections of this article:
- Remove the failed MSDE installation.
- Add the following networking components:
- Client for Microsoft Networks
- Dial-Up Adapter
- TCP/IP protocol
- Restart Windows.
- Re-install the MSDE.
Completely Remove MSDE- In Windows Explorer, delete the \MSSQL7 folder and its contents.
- Start the Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve
problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk.
- Locate and delete the MSSQLServer key under the following key of your registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft
Add Additional Networking Components to Windows 95 or Windows 98 Computers- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- In Control Panel, double-click the Network icon.
- In the Network dialog box, click Add.
- In the Select Network Component Type list, select Client, and then click Add.
- In the Select Network Client dialog box, select Microsoft in the Manufacturers list, and click Client for Microsoft Networks in the Network Clients list.
- Click OK.
- When you are prompted to select a Network Adapter, click Microsoft in the Manufacturers list, and in the Network Adapters list, click Dial-Up Adapter.
The TCP/IP protocol stack will be automatically installed as part of the Dial-Up Adapter. - Click OK on this and the following dialog box.
- If prompted, insert the media for your operating system.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
You should now be able to install the MSDE successfully.
