Information icon displayed for sent items in Outlook (235426)

Note The procedures in this article only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. With this option, you can use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, click About Microsoft Outlook, on the Help menu. If you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation, you see "Corporate or Workgroup".

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Outlook, some messages in your Sent Items folder may contain icons that are an envelope with an "i" superimposed on it.

The "i" on the envelope icon indicates messages that contain voting or tracking information. If you send a message with voting or tracking information, when the tracking information is triggered, the icon in your sent items includes the "i." If you open these messages you will see a Tracking tab that contains any tracking information. Actions that can trigger voting or tracking information for a message include:
  • Sending a message with voting buttons
  • Sending a message and requesting a delivery receipt
  • Sending a message and requesting a read receipt
  • Recalling a message
The tracking information only appears when you receive a response. For example, you send a message requesting a read receipt. The copy of the message in your Sent Items folder does not include the "i" on the envelope, nor does it contain a Tracking tab. When the recipient opens your message, the read receipt is sent to you and the copy of the message in your sent Items folder changes to include a Tracking tab and the "i" on the envelope. To use tracking options you must format your message as rich text.
