XIMS: IMS Storms Host When Remote Host Returns 552 Error for First Recipient (235316)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Commercial Internet System 1.0
  • Microsoft Commercial Internet System 2.0

This article was previously published under Q235316

SYMPTOMS

Some Internet service providers (ISPs) use error code 552 as their "this recipient is over quota" message. Therefore, when an ISP receives a message from an SP4 Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server (acting as a client), an attack on their server occurs.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Commercial Internet System versions 1.0 and 2.0.

MORE INFORMATION

This fix resolves the issues by applying the following logic:
  • When the MCIS SMTP server receives a 552 error before any recipients have been accepted, it will treat this error as a per-mailbox error instead of a too many recipients error. When the MCIS SMTP server receives a 250 success value for a recipient, it will not resend the message to those recipients even when a 552 error is received for a different recipient. When the MCIS SMTP server receives a 552 after one recipient has been sent, it will stop sending the mail message to additional recipients. This keeps the MCIS SMTP server from sending messages repeatedly.
