XL: Custom Function May Return Different Result When Opened as HTML File (235099)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Excel 2000
- Microsoft Excel 2002
This article was previously published under Q235099 SYMPTOMS
A custom function may return a different answer when you open a Microsoft Excel workbook that you saved as HTML, than it does when you open the same file saved as an Excel workbook.
CAUSE
When opening a workbook, Excel recalculates only those cells that may have changed, such as volatile functions. When opening a workbook saved as HTML, Excel does a full recalculation of all cells, defined names, links, and every dependency chain in the workbook, whether it needs it or not. This behavior is by design of Microsoft Excel.
RESOLUTION
To have functions in Excel workbooks return the same result as seen after opening an HTML file, force a complete recalculation of the workbook by pressing CTRL+ALT+F9.
MORE INFORMATION
A workbook saved as a Web page (HTML) recalculates all cells when you open or save the file, even if the the workbook is set to manual calculation.
