PRJ98: Microsoft Project Crashes or Quits When Started (235005)

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Project 98, you may receive one of the following error messages, or Microsoft Project may start and then immediately quit with no error message.

In Windows 95 or 98

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details, you receive the following error message:
WINPROJ caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at <address>.

In Windows NT

An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

WINPROJ.EXE
Exception: access violation (0xc0000005), Address: <address>.
<address> is a Windows memory address.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you start Microsoft Project and either the Decimal symbol or the Digit grouping symbol setting is blank. These settings are found under the Regional Settings icon in Control Panel.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, change the Decimal symbol to a period (.) and the Digit grouping symbol to a comma (,). To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Regional Settings icon.
  3. Click the Number tab.
  4. In the Decimal symbol list, click the period (.).
  5. In the Digit grouping symbol list, click the comma (,).

    NOTE: You can use most any character other than blank (null) for the Decimal symbol or the Digit grouping symbol settings.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Restart your computer.
