PRJ98: Project Crashes on Startup After Upgrading from Evaluation Copy (234757)

After installing the retail version of Microsoft Project 98, you may experience either of the following symptoms when you start Microsoft Project: - You may continue to see the expiration counter message from the evaluation copy.
-or-
- You may receive one of the following error messages.
In Windows 95 or 98
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details, you receive the following error message:
WINPROJ caused an invalid page fault in module WINPROJ.EXE at
address.
In Windows NT
An Application Error has occurred and an application error log is
being generated.
Winproj.exe
Exception access Violation (oxc0000005), Address:<address>
Where address is a memory address.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs when you install the retail version of Microsoft Project 98 in the same directory as the evaluation copy.
-and-
You do not completely remove the evaluation copy before you install the retail version of Microsoft Project 98.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
- Delete the following files, located in the directory where you installed Microsoft Project (by default, this is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office):
Winproj.exe
Winproj.dlg
Pj8od8.dll
Pj8od8.dlg
Prj98.stf
- Rename the Global.mpt file, located in the directory where you installed Microsoft Project. To rename the Global.mpt file, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
- In the Named box, type the Global.mpt.
- In the Look in box, click the drive where you installed Microsoft Project (for example, click C:).
- Click Find Now.
- Right-click the Global.mpt file when found, and then click Rename.
- Rename the file to Global.old.
- Reinstall Microsoft Project 98.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
