WD97: Word Document Is Saved Locally When Saved in Internet Explorer (234676)

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Word document in Microsoft Internet Explorer from a URL similar to http://sharename/foldername, modify the document, and then save it, the document is not saved to the location from which you opened it. It is saved to a local folder instead.

RESOLUTION

To resolve the problem described in this article, obtain and install the latest Microsoft Word 97 update from the following Microsoft Web site: IMPORTANT NOTE: Microsoft Word 97 post-service release fixes are cumulative. The latest update contains all of the fixes since Service Release 2. If you install the latest update for Word 97, you do not need to install any other updates after Service Release 2.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, browse Word documents in the Internet Explorer window instead of a separate window.
  1. Double-click My Computer on the Desktop.
  2. On the View menu, click Folder Options, and select the File Types tab.
  3. On the File Types tab, click Microsoft Word Document in the list of registered file types.
  4. Click Edit.
  5. Click to select the Browse in same window check box, and then click OK twice.
