SUMMARY

This article describes how to migrate your user profile settings in Microsoft Windows 95/98 when you upgrade to Windows 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

When you upgrade from Microsoft Windows 95/98 to Windows 2000, if you do not join the computer to a domain during setup, a local user account is created using your domain logon name and your profile settings are migrated to that account.

For information about User profile migration and Windows 9x upgrade, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

232970 Description of Windows 2000 User Account and Profile Migration

When you join the computer to the domain and you log on using a domain account, a new default desktop is created for the new account.

To retrieve the original profile settings, copy it over to the domain accounts profile that is kept on the local computer. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Log on to the computer using an Administrator account.
  2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  3. On the User Profiles tab, click the local profile that contains the settings you want, and then click Copy To.

NOTE: The profile usually contains the name of the computer and the name of the user account.
  4. In the Copy profile to box, click Browse, and then browse to the folder that contains the profiles. If the network path requires credentials, if you manually enter the path, the profiles will not load. The default folder for profiles is C:\Documents and Settings.
  5. Click the domain accounts folder, which by default has the Netbios name of the domain appended to the username.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click Change, add the appropriate permissions to the domain user account so that it can use the profile, and then click OK until you return to the desktop.
