PRB: Tape Backup Fails with OS Error 87 on SQL Server Service Pack 5a (234438)

SYMPTOMS

SQL Server tape backup may fail with certain tape drives after you install SQL Server Service Pack 5a. The errors in the SQL Server 6.5 Service Pack 5a errorlog are:
1999/05/10 12:15:00.50 kernel tprvol: Seek operation in backup device '\\.\TAPE0' returned operating system error = 87(The parameter is incorrect.)

CAUSE

The 4mmdat.sys driver must be updated to the one that is available with Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4.0.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use either of the following:
  • Reinstall Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4.0. -or-

  • Apply the new 4mmdata.sys driver found in the Alpha or I386 subdirectory of the Windows NT 4.0 SP4 Service Pack. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Add the driver by selecting Control Panel then choose Tape Devices.
    2. Click the Drivers tab.
    3. Click the Add button.
    4. Double-click the "4 millimeter DAT Drive" selection in the Tape Devices window.
    5. Follow the instructions and use browse to locate the 4mmdat.sys driver on the Windows NT 4.0 SP4 CD-ROM, which is in the Alpha or I386 subdirectories.
