SUMMARY

Small Business Server (SBS) includes the standard Microsoft Windows NT Disk Administrator tool. You can use this tool to change the drive letter of the boot partition, but doing so can cause problems. If SBS is installed on drive C and you change the drive letter for drive C to some other letter, several services in SBS stop working, although the operating system itself does start.

MORE INFORMATION

The following services stop working when you change the drive letter as described above:

The MSDTC Service
The IP Filter Driver service
The Proxy Alert Notification service
The Microsoft Proxy Server Administration service
The Microsoft Search service
The Microsoft SQL Main Server service
The Protected Storage service
The World Wide Web (WWW) Publishing service
The Microsoft Winsock Proxy service
The IIS Admin Service service
The Microsoft Exchange System Attendant service
The Protected Storage service
The Microsoft Exchange Directory service
The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service
The Microsoft Exchange Message Transfer Agent service
The Microsoft Exchange Event service

To resolve this issue, change the drive's letter from the current drive letter back to the original letter, and then restart the computer.

NOTE: Programs that are hard-coded to use drive C instead of the Expand_SZ %SystemRoot% parameter also do not work when you change the drive letter. This behavior applies to installed client programs as well.
