This article was previously published under Q233376

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Windows 2000 SMTP server, you can specify the maximum number of recipients on each message on each SMTP server. The minimum value that is permitted for this specification is 100, in accordance with SMTP standards, which specify that servers must be able to handle at least 100 recipients. The maximum value permitted is 2,000,000,000. Note that default minimum value in Windows SMTP Server is set to 64,000.

MORE INFORMATION

If you set the number for recipients on a message to a low value, it is harder for people who send junk e-mail to send a message to a lot of recipients.

To set the number of recipients that are permitted for an SMTP message:
  1. In the left pane of Exchange System Manager, locate the server on which you want to set the per-message recipient limit.
  2. Expand the container for the server.
  3. Expand the server's Protocols container.
  4. Click the SMTP protocol container object.
  5. In the right pane, right-click the object that represents the virtual server instance for which limits are to be set, and then click Properties.
  6. In the Properties window for the virtual server instance, click the Messages tab.
  7. Change the value for the Limit number of recipients per message to setting to the limit that you require. By default, this item is checked and the value is set at 64,000.
