The responsibility of the store driver in Exchange 2000 Server is to:

• Deliver inbound messages from the Advanced Queuing (AQ) engine to the information store for local delivery.
• Submit messages from the information store to AQ for categorization and possible outbound delivery.
• Deliver messages from AQ to other (non-SMTP) gateways.
• Enable an IMsg queued in AQ to be persisted in the information store.

The IMsg interface is a carry-over from Microsoft Commercial Internet System (MCIS). It is a simple and versatile interface that allows for setting and getting properties on the message. In Exchange 2000 Server, this interface has several additional capabilities so that it can be used as the standard interface across system components. The IMsg is used as the interface parameter between the information store drivers and the AQ, both for message submission by the information store to the AQ, and for local delivery from AQ to the information store. Although the design of this interface is quite simple, it is very powerful in its ability to allow storage and retrieval of well-known message properties (such as SENDER and RECIPIENT), and its usage of the property values as the communications mechanism between system components.
