256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SUMMARY

This article describes how to restrict users from changing the playback protocols in Windows Media Player. These protocols include HTTP, TCP, UDP, and Multicast.

MORE INFORMATION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To restrict the ability to change the playback protocols in Windows Media Player, create a file named Resmedia.reg with the following lines. Include a blank line at the bottom of the file:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsMediaPlayer]
"AllowChangeHTTP"=dword:00000000
"AllowChangeTCP"=dword:00000000
"AllowChangeMulticast"=dword:00000000
"AllowChangeUDP"=dword:00000000

Note that a value of 0 disables the menu choice; a value of 1 makes the choice available.

To apply the .reg file silently from a logon script, use the following syntax:

regedit.exe /s \\server\share\resmedia.reg
